Since clocks falling back an hour
is completely meaningless to my toddler, we were out and about on Sunday quite
early and I found myself impressed by how active of a town Fort Thomas really
is. Early, raining, and cold and
yet, dozens of runners were out, well, running. This made me think of one of my favorite family traditions:
the Thanksgiving Day Race.
This year is the 103rd
running of the Turkey Trot race, making it the sixth oldest race in the
country. But did you know that the
race began in Fort Thomas in 1908?
Eighteen runners got the idea to run from the Fort Thomas Gym to the
YMCA in downtown Cincinnati and from that humble beginning, we now have a 10k
that sees more than 6,000 annual registrants.
From a family tradition aspect, the
race is stroller friendly, although furry family members (meaning dogs, not
great uncles) are not allowed.
Also, after running 6.2 miles, you can eat as much as you want with
absolutely no shame.
(Did she just say 6.2 miles?). I know, I know, it sounds like a long
distance and not necessarily how you want to start your day of feasting. But it is not too late to start
training. Personal story: less
than 3 years ago I could not run a single mile without crying. Two weeks ago, I completed a half
marathon so I promise it is possible.
If you need a little help getting
motivated, search out a running group to join. Although the race is only three weeks away, it is not quite
too late to start training. Bob Roncker’s (in Newport) has a
training group for runners of all skill levels. Although they began training weeks ago, it would not be too
late for a last minute push.
To register for the race, go to
their website at Turkey Trot Race
and click on the registration link on the left hand side. Registration is only $30 (one of the
cheapest races in the area, actually) and proceeds benefit a number of local
charities including Ronald McDonald House, Girls on the Run, Barrett Cancer
Center, Go Vibrant, Kilgour School, Clark Montessori, Neediest Kids of All,
Goodwill, Accounting for Kids. You
can also donate to these directly from the race website.
I won’t be running this
year but if you see my husband, tell him to hurry up!
