Ah, holiday
happenings in Fort Thomas. You
know, the perfect time of year for hot chocolate, snuggling up by a crackling
fire place, and taking a mile long walk outdoors with children in tow (one of
these things is not like the other… one of these things just doesn’t
belong). That’s right, it is time
for the annual Holiday walk and tree lighting. This year, for the second time, they have split the walk
into two events, making it much more manageable than starting at Inverness and
ending at Midway districts. The
events are described below for anyone who may not have attended this
previously. In all seriousness, it
is a great event (one for family, and one for real fun).
On Sunday
December 2, bring the kids and head over to Inverness (corner of North Fort
Thomas Ave and Memorial, across from the Marathon station if you didn’t know)
and watch the tree lighting at 5:30.
An obligatory Santa appearance will also occur at 5:30; he will be on
hand for the tree lighting and then will head up to the firehouse for
photos. The walk begins at
Inverness and goes to the Towne Center section of town; businesses will be open
for the public and many will be giving little gifts, treats, and hot cocoa for
walkers.
Also, the Fort
Thomas Woman’s Club will be hosting a gingerbread house contest in conjunction
with the walk. The Club is
encouraging residents young and old to build and decorate their own gingerbread
house and bring it to the Woman’s Club Building (8 N. Ft. Thomas Ave.) on
Saturday December 1 between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm to drop it off. They will then be on display during the
walk on Sunday and the women of the club will be giving away $250 in prizes for
adult and children categories.
The walk ends at
8:00 pm.
The following
Friday December 7 is the “Hop”. The
“Hop”, in its second year, is a holiday event to highlight the Midway
District. From 7:00pm- midnight,
the businesses of the historic Midway District will be open. The Hop includes a Best Dressed Santa
contest so come dressed to impress!
It promises to be a great night out, primarily adult-oriented.
So, if you’re
wondering what to do with your kids during the Hop, head over to the YMCA where
they are offering a “Parent’s Night Out” evening babysitting. The service runs 6:00pm-10:00pm and
costs $25 per child/$40 per family for members ($30/$50 non-members). Fun activities will be provided for the
children. Registration ends
December 4 (contact Becca Allen at ballen@cincinnatiymca.org
to register).
