Campbell County Sheriff Issues 2nd Amendment Statement

Sheriff Jeff Kidwell issued a statement on his position on our Constitutional Second Amendment Rights to his constituents via social media Tuesday. Kudos to him for embracing social media. The Sheriff's Facebook page is here and the twitter page is here.

The picture above is his statement. Pretty hard to read, so I'll transcribe verbatim.

His letter is below...

Citizens of Campbell County, I have been contacted by many of you asking what my position is on our constitutional second amendment rights, so allow me (to) share with you my and our agency's position.

I have been in the law enforcement community for almost two decades and I have witnessed many crimes committed with firearms. I have also witnessed good, law-abiding citizens protect themselves and their families with firearms.

I do not believe the crimes committed by people can be attributed to the firearms, themselves but to the people who use firearms for illegal purposes. Firearms are simply a tool and as with any tool, can be misused and cause harm.

I am proud to say that I was one of the first carry concealed deadly weapons instructors (number 74) in our great commonwealth and I am proud to have assisted my fellow citizens in exercising their second amendment rights.

Over the years, every time that I have been elected to office, including my most recent elections as your Sheriff, I took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

I consider my oath to be a sacred bond between myself and the people of Campbell County. That being said let me make it clear that I will not, nor will I ever, command anyone in my employ to confiscate firearms from law-abiding citizens as long as the second amendment is the law of the land.

A Presidential, or any other type of directive does not remove our second amendment rights and enforcing such a directive would violate my oath of office. I hope this open letter answers your questions on this issue. If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact my office.

Thank you,

Jeff Kidwell
Campbell County Sheriff

  1. Well, there's nothing wrong with his statement but really, there is absolutely no suggestion, not even a hint of a suggestion, that President Obama would ever issue a directive to confiscate firearms or take away anyone's rights under the second amendment. Mr. Kidwell might as well say that he would not obey any directive to curtail our right of free speech, or force everyone to attend the same church. It's just not an issue.

  2. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah...

The Sheriff has to enforce the laws on the books.. NO local law enforcement personnel have EVER been directed to carry out a presidential directive..

Just a load of BS to pander to his local electorate... Local law enforcment doesn't get to choose what laws to enforce.. If he is intimating that he has any choice in the matter, he is full of it..

  3. What law school did Mr. Kidwell attend? I don't recall seeing in his bio any expertise in Constitutional law. I feel better knowing one of my elected officials is willing to disobey federally mandated laws to protect his rights even if the Constitution gives the government the right to enact such legislation.

  4. Doesn't anybody see the significance? States are increasinging turning to themselves to self govern. Case in point recent changes in the marijuana laws in colorado and Washington. A federal crime but no longer a state crime in either states above. Segregation is the new normal. People will move to whatever state aligns with there belief system, Which will polarize the American public ever further than it already has. Something Mr. Kidwell, is quick to point out above. If you support gun rights, your in the right place. If you don't, listen to what Caliornia is saying on the issue, I promise it's the same rhetoric.
