Mama on a Budget: Valentines Day Activities

While imprisoned for performing illegal weddings for soldiers, Valentinus fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and in his final love act, he passed a note to his lover during his execution that said “from you Valentine”.  Valentinus was so devoted to his lover that he literally became a martyr and a Saint for her.  My husband bought, signed, and addressed Valentine’s cards in bulk five years ago and thinks I don’t know.

So, I will be spending Valentine’s day at the library!  The Newport branch of the Campbell County Public Library has three events for children this week.  The library, located at 901 E 6th St. in Newport, is holding a Mad Hatter Valentine Party later today at 4:00 pm.  From the website:

Don't be late for this very important date! We will make a balloon hat and have some Valentine treats!  Age range: ages 6-11. Snacks provided.  This event will also be repeated for their Super Saturday event but at 2:00 pm.

Additionally, they are having an:

It's Valentine's Day. Who Cares? We just like candy. Hey, I made Haiku Age range: 12 and up

Or, blow off Valentine’s Day altogether and instead go see the world-premiere of the Magical Adventures of Merlin.  This performance, at the Taft Theatre, premieres on February 15 and repeats the next day.  “This world-premiere musical will introduce audiences to the teenage wizard, Merlin, and his mysterious and magical youth. This coming-of-age tale, will share the back story of Merlin, his boyhood friend ,-- King Arthur, and the beautiful, bewitching Morgana, as teens in mythical ancient England. Featuring magic tricks, slight-of-hand, illusions and more!”, from the description online.  Tickets are $7-$20 and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.

If you’re one of the lucky few for whom romance isn’t dead, then enjoy your horse-drawn carriage ride or whatever.  If you’re a normal person, then enjoy the library!
