Good news for musical theater fans: Highlands High School is presenting Aida from April 11, 2013 through April 14, 2013. This beloved musical took Broadway by storm between 2000 and 2004, and will be brought to life again by the Highlands Theater Department's talented cast and crew.
Aida is based on Giuseppe Verdi's Italian opera of the same name, and contains music by pop music icon Elton John and musical theater legend Tim Rice. The duo first worked together during the production of The Lion King back in the 1990s. After the success of The Lion King, the two joined forces again to create the music and lyrics for Aida. The play had an impressive four-year run at Broadway's Palace Theater, and also toured nationally. Additionally, it received an impressive four Tony Awards in 2000.
The Highlands Theater Department describes Aida as "a contemporary musical take on a grand classic tale of the timeless bond between an enslaved Nubian princess and an Egyptian soldier. As forbidden love blossoms between them, the young lovers are forced to face death or part forever. Together, they set a shining example of true devotion that ultimately transcends the vast cultural differences between their warring nations, heralding a time of unprecedented peace and prosperity."
