A while
back we wrote a feature on Ken Bowman and his involvement in the Sorg Opera
House, an historic theatre in Middletown, OH. To review the back story,
check out the full length feature here. To
summarize, the theatre was built in 1891 by Hannaford, the same architect who
constructed Music Hall downtown. It has played host to numerous major
performers including the Sousa Band and even operated as a movie theatre for
some time but has had several bouts of vacancy including the most recent one
since 2011. As a result, it has fallen into disrepair but concerned
citizens, Bowman included, have taken it upon themselves to try to restore and
revitalize the theatre.
In that vein, Bowman and the Sorg Revitalization Group are
planning a big street party in front of the Sorg on September 12 at 7:00 pm. Music
will be provided by the Bluebirds Big Band and G. Miles & The Hitmen.
Food by New Orleans to Go and Texas Joe’s Tex Mex with plenty of beer and soft
drinks also available. Additionally, since this is a celebration of the “rebirth”
of the theatre, there will be birthday cake. Building tours will be given
throughout the evening. Tickets are $10 in advance ($15 day of) and the
proceeds go toward the restoration project. For more information, check
out their events page on the website here.
