A new wrinkle in Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 6's Revive the Drive project, now culminating its second and final phase of major upgrades to I-471, will hit the road this weekend as overhead signs are replaced for a major portion of the highway's southbound lanes. This will result in weekend-long lane restrictions and periodic rolling closures across all lanes.
According to an email sent today from KYTC District 6 spokesperson Nancy Wood: beginning at 10 PM Friday night, traffic restrictions will begin on I-471 SB. By 3 AM Saturday morning, traffic will be restricted to a single lane, beginning on the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge, extending through the I-275 Interchange. Lane closures may stay in place until Monday morning.
The sign replacement will also impact exit and entrance ramps along I-471 SB for approximately two hours on Saturday. If an exit or entrance is closed, drivers should use the next exit, as no detour signs will be posted.
Rolling closures will also be necessary from time to time throughout the weekend, in order to hang signs that span all lanes. These closures may last as long as 20 minutes, and drivers are instructed to expect long delays as a result.
"Please use caution," Ms. Wood urges, "reduce speed, and watch for traffic control devices, equipment, and crews along the work zone."
Replacing overhead signage is just the latest in a string of tasks undertaken by KYTC District 6's Revive the Drive project. Aside from similar construction projects carried out last summer on I-471 NB, Revive the Drive has also coordinated:
- the re-painting of 18 bridge structures along I-275 in Kenton County
- concrete pavement repair along I-275 WB from Turfway Road to the airport interchange in Boone County
- concrete pavement repair on I-275 EB from US 25 to KY 9 in Kenton County
- several exit and entrance ramp widening projects along I-275
among other, smaller projects.
FTM is still waiting for a statement from KYTC District 6 regarding the projected end-date of the I-471 SB resurfacing project.
