A woman was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon after she ran off Interstate 275 and crashed onto the roadway below.
The woman was driving a Chevrolet Malibu westbound about 2 p.m. when she ran off the left side of the interstate and down an embankment, said Wilder Police Lt. Mike Murdock.
As the car crashed down the embankment, it hit a tree which caused it to flip onto its top as it slid onto Three Mile Road, he said. The car came to rest under the interstate between the eastbound and westbound overpasses.
The woman was trapped in the car as it began to burn, but was pulled out by police officers and bystanders.
The woman, who is in her 70s and is from Ohio, was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital. Her name was not released because her family had not been notified.
Police do not know what caused the woman to run off the road but witnesses said she had her flashers on before the accident occurred, Murdock said.
Three Mile Road was closed under the interstate until the car was removed. Officials also called in a salt truck because the roadway was wet.
The road reopened just after 3 p.m.
