HHS Fighting Birds aim to raise funds, fight hunger in Tri-State

Highlands students will be participating in an effort to raise money to feed the less fortunate, and they're looking for anyone that would like to join their team.

According to reports, one in six people in the Tri-State area are food insecure, which means they do not know where their next meal is coming from. In an effort to combat this epidemic entrepreneurship students will be participating in an event to help fight hunger.

On Memorial Day, Monday, May 26 Sawyer Point will host the 2014 Hunger Walk and 5K Run.

The funds raised during the 5K Hunger Walk go to support the Freestore Foodbank and its 275 community partners.

The Highlands team, the Highlands Fighting Birds, have set a fundraising goal of $750.

The team is looking for people to join the ranks of the Fighting Birds.

Anyone interested in joining, donating to the Highlands Fighting Birds or learning more details about the event can click here. People are able to check on the status of the money raised and see who has pledged funds to fight hunger.

It is only $15 to register to participate in the race and 100 percent of the registration fee goes to benefit the over 275 soup kitchens, pantries and shelters across Northern Kentucky, Southeast Indiana and Southwest Ohio.

The team is also selling t-shirts for $7 and all proceeds from shirt sales will go towards achieving the fundraising goals. Anyone interested in purchasing a shirt should contact the HHS business teacher Elise Carter

The Fighting Bluebirds team said if you're not able to participate in the race any donation is greatly appreciated. According to the Freestore Foodbank, every dollar donated provides an entire day's worth of food for someone who is hungry.
