NKY Hates Heroin will host a 5K Run & Walk sponsored by St. Elizabeth on Saturday, June 7.
The event will be held at 8:30 a.m. at Simon Kenton High School.
Pre-registration cost is $25 (due May 31) and same-day registration is $30. Race coordinators urge participants to register in advance to save time and money. A t-shirt is included with registration while supplies last.
Awards will be given to the top three male and female runners and walkers.
Refreshments will be available.
The event will bring awareness to the heroin epidemic that is killing people at an enormous rate in NKY, as well as raise money to help with prevention, education and recovery.
NKY Hates Heroin was started by the Specht, Stegner, Layman and Schell families of Fort Thomas after they were personally impacted by the heroin epidemic.
Holly and Eric Specht lost their 30-year-old son Nicholas to heroin in August of 2013.
Although Nicholas had been in and out of rehab, staying off heroin was tough. The family vowed to work on prevention, education and rehabilitation in hopes that other families won't suffer the same way.
