Twelve years ago a 9-year-old girl lost her battle with pediatric cancer. Elana Brophy is honored every year by her family and friends in the Loop for Lana 5K Run/ Walk. The event benefits the Elana Brophy Memorial Foundation as well as the Cincinnati Children's Hosptial Medical Center; in particular the Cancer and Blood Disease Institute.
The Loop for Lana will be held on October 4 at 9:30 a.m. at the Columbia Sussex building in Crestview Hills.
The Elana Brophy Memorial Foundation (formally the Elana Brophy Memorial Scholarship Fund) was originally formed to award a scholarship each year to a graduating student from St. Pius X School, where Elana attended, moving on to catholic high school.
This year the scholarship fund became the Elana Brophy Memorial Foundation, and with the funds raised the foundation hopes to not only continue the scholarship in Elana's name, but also reach out to other organizations with donations to help with their mission to help others, in a variety of different ways.
Representatives from the foundation said they feel confident that the help they can give through the foundation will represent the spirit of courage that Elana possessed during her battle with cancer.
In the event's first year more than 300 people participated and the attendance has only grown in years since.
Participants can register in person on October 3 at the Tri-State Running Company from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. or on race day beginning at 7:30 a.m.
If you cannot make it to the event in October, but would still like to donate to the foundation that is an option. That information, along with all other information can be found at the Elana Brophy Memorial Foundation home page or the event's Facebook page.
