|Hoxworth Blood Center Donation Bus/Hoxworth|
The Hoxworth Blood Center will be sending their donor bus to the Fort Thomas Fire Department's ramp for blood donations from the Fort Thomas community on Oct. 21.
Hoxworth hosts an annual blood drive with the FTFD and 2014 will be the 4th annual blood drive.
Every donation is especially important this year because Hoxworth has recorded high usage along with low donations.
"This year we have seen record high usage combined with very low donation turn out. The increased usage is in part due to the bone marrow treatment/therapy offered at University Hospital, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and Jewish Hospital," Hoxworth Blood Center's blood donor recruiter and community relations associate Katie Glahn said.
Fort Thomas Matters asked if there was a specific type of blood that is needed more than others.
"We need all blood types. We are often asked what blood type is most in demand and our go to answer is the type that is not on the shelf when you or a family member needs it," Glahn said. "At times we may appeal to the community requesting that individuals with specific blood types donate based on the needs of patients in our area hospitals."
For those interested in participating in the donation the entire process takes about an hour.
"(Donors) should plan to spend 45 minutes to one hour for the entire process, which includes paperwork and a mini physical. The actual time spent donating blood takes under 15 minutes," Glahn said.
The blood drive will take place from noon to 2:15 p.m. and then continue from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Donors can schedule their appointment online here or call Hoxworth at 513-451-0910.
