|The Weeki Wachee Mermaids will be at the Newport Aquarium during October/Weeki Wachee|
Starting Friday, through October 19, visitors to the Newport Aquarium might not believe their eyes. That's because one of the exhibits will feature living, swimming mermaids.
Okay. They're not actually mermaids, but swimmers who have learned to swim with a leg-length fin similar to that which is common to the mythical, half-human, half-fish creature. Weeki Wachee Mermaids, based out of Weeki Wachee Springs, off the coast of Florida, will be part of a 10-day exhibit at the Newport Aquarium.
The mermaids will appear swimming in the Aquarium's "Coral Reef" exhibit, swimming with the tank's nearly 200 different types of aquatic animals and 50 types of fish, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. daily. The mermaids will also be available for two daily meet and greets, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., and then again from 2-4 p.m.
Admission to the meet and greets is included with general admission to the Aquarium.
Two special events are also scheduled, in addition to the mermaids' appearances in the water.
On Saturday, October 11, the Aquarium will host the Mermaid Overnight Adventure. Visitors will get to meet a mermaid up-close and out of the water during a meet and greet in Shark Ray Bay Theater, plus see a mermaid swim in the Coral Reef exhibit. The overnight also includes exclusive Aquarium access, mermaid crafts, mermaid bingo and a mermaid plush to take home.
The overnight adventure costs $59 ($50 for annual pass holders) plus tax.
In addition, on the mornings of Saturday, October 11, and Sundays, October 12 and 19, visitors can enjoy Breakfast with Mermaids in the Aquarium's Riverside Room overlooking the Ohio River. In addition to the breakfast, visitors will also be granted access to the exhibit and an exclusive meet and greet.
The breakfasts begin at 8:30 p.m., and cost $42 ($32 for annual pass holders) plus tax.
Check here for more information or to purchase tickets for either special event.
