The Importance, History Behind Small Business Saturday

Fort Thomas Matters is a champion of shop local. Very little of what the website aims to do would be possible without the help of Fort Thomas businesses.

Small Business Saturday is one day of the year set aside to stray away from the massive box stores, and show appreciation for small businesses.

American Express started the concept of taking a weekend owned by big box retailers and create a day of business and engagement for small business owners that lacked the budget to compete with those larger retailers.

Small Business Saturday was marketed by American Express using a combination of content, social media promotion and paid advertisements.

The social media results for the 2013 SBS speak for themselves. More than 213,000 tweets included the hashtags #smallbizsat and #shopsmall, and the movement’s Facebook page garnered 3.2 million likes.

Most importantly are the dollars and cents. The 2012 Small Business Saturday campaign generated $5.5 billion in revenue for independent retailers nationwide.

THE HISTORY & FACTS OF SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY
  • Small businesses provide 55 percent of all jobs and 66 percent of all net new jobs since the 1970s.
  • While overall sales growth is up for all retailers, sales for companies with less than $5 million in revenue is down in recent years, so Small Business Saturday can provide smaller businesses with the boost they need.
  • 77 percent of shoppers who are aware of Small Business Saturday plan to shop this weekend.
  • The 23 million small businesses in America account for more than half of all U.S. sales.
  • Half of all newly established small businesses survive five years or more and only one-third survive 10 years or more.
  • The fastest growing sectors for small businesses in 2011 included beauty salons, dry cleaners and auto repair shops. Consider these stores as well on Saturday because Small Business Saturday goes beyond gift giving
