A Highlands High School coach has been named Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

Brian Alessandro, head coach for girls and boys cross country at Highlands High School, received the award in the category of girls cross country. This award is based on the 2013-14 season.

Alessandro also teaches language arts at Highlands Middle School and is the head coach for the Highlands’ girls track and field team.

Alessandro stated, “I am very excited to be named Coach of the Year. It's a terrific honor and a true testament to the hard work the runners put in every day at practice and in the off-season. I am very fortunate to have assistant coaches who support the program and understand the direction we have built over the last few years.”

Additionally, Dale Mueller, Highlands High School athletic director stated, “Brian continues to do an outstanding job as the Highlands’ boys and girls cross country coach and the girls track coach, and this award as the NFHS Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year confirms that. It is a great tribute to his leadership and hard work and also to the girls’ dedication to excellence.”

The NFHS based its selections on the following criteria: career coaching record, community service, involvement in other school activities, professional involvement at local, state and national levels, and basic philosophy of athletics.

This year a total of 533 coaches from around the country were recognized with state, sectional and national awards.
