Dale Mueller Wins National Coaching Award

Dale Mueller, athletic director and former head football coach at Highlands High School, has been named National Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). This award is based on the 2013-14 playing season.

Additionally, Mueller is just one of 21 coaches to receive a national level award and the only one in the category of boys’ football. Over 500 coaches were recognized this year with state, sectional and national awards.

The NFHS based their selections on the following criteria: career coaching record, community service, involvement in other school activities, professional involvement at local, state and national levels, and basic philosophy of athletics.

“I am deeply honored to have been selected as the National Coach of the Year for football by the NFHS. I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate the great efforts of the players, coaches, and administration. This award is particularly special because the NFHS not only recognizes the team's success on the field but also the football program's philosophy of attempting to have a substantial positive impact on the people involved. I have been truly blessed to be a part of it,” stated Mueller.

“The National Federation of State High School Associations could not have made a better selection than Dale Mueller to serve as the National Coach of the Year,” said Brian Robinson, Highlands High School principal. “Dale stands as an example for coaches and educators that being focused on the growth of individual student athletes as better citizens and young adults is the same attention that creates highly successful teams. The only thing more outstanding than his accomplishments on the football field as a head coach is the impact he has made on thousands of young men and our community. Our entire school community congratulates him on this recognition.”

Fort Thomas Independent Schools Superintendent Gene Kirchner added, “I am incredibly excited about Coach Mueller’s selection as National Coach of the Year. The standard of excellence which he has established at Highlands is unparalleled in the history of Kentucky high school athletics. While his legacy will forever be tied to state championships, it is the way in which he has taught generations of young men to truly be champions that makes him stand out.”
