BREAKING: Fire at Ruth Moyer Elementary School

Ruth Moyer Elementary. FTM file.
According to Fort Thomas Fire Chief, Mark Bailey, the cause of the fire is still undetermined. He did make it clear that there was also no suspicious activity involved.

"A maintenance worker was hand shoveling for about 45 minutes and we got a call 10 minutes later. A heat sensor detected a fire in the storage shed and worked just like it was supposed to." he said.

There was a little water in the gym and a small amount of smoke haze. A lawn plow was destroyed where the fire originated. Officials are estimating about $10,000 in damage.

Reports started coming in around 6:30 that there was a possible structure fire at Ruth Moyer Elementary School.

Units from Wilder and Newport were ready to respond on a second alarm assignment when the county fire command canceled that because Fort Thomas Fire was able to control and put the fire out.

Fort Thomas Police were also on scene. Lt. Casey Kilgore confirmed the fire and said that it was a fire in a storage shed on the property and involved gasoline. Initial information was that the fire did not enter the main part of the school.

Because of the President's Day holiday no one was in the school and no one was hurt. School administrators are expected to survey the damage tomorrow, however students will be at home for the second day in a row as Fort Thomas Independent Schools has already called a snow day for Tuesday.

This story will be updated.
