Is Rio Grande in Newport Closing?

Rumors began circulating this week about the possible closing of Rio Grande in the Newport Plaza. FTM checked in with owner, Octavio Correa.

The answer, according to Correa, is no. He had confirmed that he had also heard the rumors from multiple customers but assured FTM that he had no plans for closing and was just 6 months into a new five-year lease.

It's possible that with the closure of Remke's and constant rumors of Wal-Mart or Sam's Club coming to the area was the genesis of the talk, but there is no truth to this one.

  1. That's a relief. Don't know what I'd do without the Rio Grande.

  5. Would really hate to lose Rio Grande. They do a great job and offer the sort of homey value only an independent can provide. They are a good compliment to the chains across the street. The Wally World rumor has been out there since before Target. While it seems likely that Wally's / Sam's will ultimately happen somehow, between the largely vacant upper plaza, the former Kmart and soon to be former Remke, it would take some really big bucks to buy out the leases necessary to piece together enough real estate into one, contiguous parcel. They are not there yet, but adding the Remke building to Kmart and the other vacant slots certainly sends some discernable smoke signals that Wally's / Sam's is a lot closer to happening.

  7. The only reason I could see them closing, is to move into Remke for more space!!! They are constantly busy because they're the best!!
