Fort Thomas Lions Club Continues to Serve Those in Need

When you think of the Fort Thomas chapter of the Lions Club, your first thought might be their longstanding presence behind the concession stand at the Highlands High School football games. While their concession teams have always provided local sports fans with quality snacks during events, it is actually the club's devotion to helping serve and build the community that is most prominent. This is shown best through the Lions Club's vision program.

The Fort Thomas Lions Club and Opticare Vision Center work together to provide comprehensive eye exams and preventive care for those in need of eye care services. Dr. Keith Sellers and Dr. Josiah Young are part of Opticare Vision Center's Newport branch. Thanks to contributions from both the Lions Club and Opticare's staff, they are able to make sure that each patient's needs are met. "The Lions Club provides assistance for the exam and glasses," said Young. "We provide the glasses frames at no cost, and we perform the examination and make the glasses at a discounted rate for the Lions Club. Ultimately, the patient has no out-of-pocket expense, and receives a thorough eye exam and a nice pair of glasses."

During the eye health examinations, patients receiving care through the Lions Club vision program are able to undergo a number screenings to help maintain their eye health. "The eye health portion of the examination includes screening for conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy," said Young. The Opticare doctors and staff then move on to the vision portion of the exam, which includes checking for near-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism. They will then provide prescription glasses and bifocals for those that need corrective eyewear.

Opticare Vision Center also serves as a donation spot for the Lions Club. "We encourage our patients to donate their old glasses when they get new ones. The response has been great, and we've been doing this for many years. It's hard to say how many thousands of frames have been donated to the Lions Club over the years just from our office," said Young. Once old glasses are donated, they are cleaned and sorted by prescription before being distributed to to those in need.

Opticare Vision Center's involvement with the Lions Club dates back to over thirty years ago. "The original owners, Drs. Ronald Cooke and George Landon, got involved with the Lions Club as a way to provide eye care services to individuals in need. Both Dr. Sellers and I have been glad to continue this service," said Young. Over the years, financial issues have caused some of the Lions Club chapters throughout the area to dissolve or cut back on services provided to the community. The Fort Thomas Lions Club is now one of the only chapters in the area that still actively participates in the vision program. "So we hope people will see the good work that the Lions Club does and continue to support the Fort Thomas Lions Club through financial contributions and their donation of glasses," said Young.

Teaming up with the Lions Club to help our community has not only helped those in need throughout our area, but has shown the Opticare staff just how powerful giving back can be. "Our eyesight is a precious gift. And it is a privilege to be able to give back to the community helping others in need. With the help of the Lions Club, we are able to give the gift of sight. It's hard to describe in words, but when you see someone who has been legally blind and unable to afford glasses for several years put on their new pair of glasses and see well again, their reaction touches your heart," said Young.
