Remke Markets in Newport to Close Today

Via WCPO NEWPORT, Ky. — Sunday is the last day of business for the locally-owned Remke Markets store in Newport.

The store, located at 82 Carothers Road, will close its doors at 6 p.m., if not earlier.
Remke announced the closure of the location in early February.

The chain's owners at the time said they could not reach an agreement with the property's landlords to extend a 5-year-lease.

Competition for shoppers in the area also increased for the store in late 2009 when a new Kroger Marketplace opened at the nearby Newport Pavilion. A Target store opened there in 2010.

Fifty-eight people worked at the Newport Remke store. Remake Markets President Matthew Remke said he hoped many of those employees could be relocated to the grocer’s 12 remaining locations.
Eligible employees unable to be relocated would receive severance benefits.

“The decision to close our Newport location was a difficult one, and we recognize that it has a tremendous impact on both our associates and customers,” Remke said.

Liquidation of the Newport store’s inventory began last week. An employee said Sunday morning the store would more than likely all close earlier in the day after all inventory was sold.

In early February, Remke made the decision to close it's Newport location. READ MORE HERE

  1. They ended up closing at 1:15pm Sunday. They donated everything that was left to the food pantry.
