Makerspace Movement Comes to NKY

It all started with a Boone County Schools robotics team and a dream: to have a place - a "Makerspace" - where students could come to experiment, learn and play using everything from 3D printers to a hammer and nails.

The state champion Junior Brainy Bots were passionate and persistent, convincing the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Northern Kentucky Class of 2015 last fall to support and raise money for the project.

It paid off: the students' dream will come true on April 17, when the NKY Makerspace will open to the public.  Students will be on hand to demonstrate all of the cool technology that the LNK 2015 class was able to provide.

The Makerspace movement is built around a simple concept: that children best learn by doing. The new facility is filled with state-of-the-art technology and tools to help create the innovators of tomorrow, thanks to the generous support of the Greater Cincinnati business community, including corporate citizens like Toyota and Perfetti.

“Makerspace encourages collaboration, free thinking while providing tools and guidance to make dreams a reality,” said Leadership Northern Kentucky project co-chair Larry Luebbers.
“Every day I am amazed with the creative ideas of my 12 year old daughter. The Makerspace will allow she and other kids from the region to turn their ideas into reality. The region already has three award-winning robotics teams, and that’s just the beginning of the success our children can achieve when we provide them encouragement, freedom and the tools they need.”

Boone County Schools will staff and operate the facility, which will serve students of all ages from across the Northern Kentucky region.

About the NKY Makerspace
The mission of the NKY Makerspace is to create an environment where students can meet to think, create and build – and become the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs.  Activities will focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) education.  It will train students to think beyond a test or a grade – to think for themselves and create new things.  We hope to create a model that can be replicated throughout the region.
