C.A.S.T. students will present “Ragtime”

This program and performance is part of the Fort Thomas Independent Schools.

Fort Thomas Independent Schools’ Summer Production Returns

WHAT: The Commonwealth Artists Summer Theatre (C.A.S.T.) group, under the direction of Fort Thomas Independent Schools’ theatre instructor Jason Burgess, will produce Ragtime.

The cast includes students from Anderson, Cincinnati Country Day, Highlands, Newport Central Catholic, Scott, Seven Hills and Walnut Hills high schools.

Ragtime, written by the award-winning composer/lyricist team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens and noted playwright Terrence McNally, is the winner of the 1998 TONY Awards for Best Score among other awards.

Ragtime takes place at the dawn of a new century. Everything is changing and anything is possible. Set in the volatile melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York, three distinctly American tales are woven together.

A stifled upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant and a daring young Harlem musician. They are united by courage, compassion and belief in the promise of the future. Together they confront history's timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair and what it means to live in America.

What is CAST?
Commonwealth Artists Summer Theatre (CAST) is a project for students in the Greater Cincinnati area who range from being incoming freshman to graduating seniors in high school.

Why was CAST created?
CAST was started with the idea of giving high school students a different avenue to be involved in a theatrical production and potentially master classes when schools are not in session.  The ultimate goal is to open the doors of collaboration to students from different high schools in the Greater Cincinnati Area to create and produce a show together and to establish new relationships and create new friendships.  In fact, our mission statement and strategies read as followed:

Mission Statement
To provide excellent opportunities for young theatre artists in the Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati area to develop their skills in performance and production beyond their school year and beyond their school population, to learn from each other, and to begin networking.

We will carry out this mission in the summer by offering area high school students the opportunity to gain experience in quality theatrical productions, both on- and off-stage, and by reaching out to college students to train and mentor the cast and crew.

Where does CAST take place?
Meetings, rehearsals and performances are at Highlands High School, which is located at 2400 Memorial Parkway, Ft. Thomas, KY 41075
