Campbell Jailer Recovering After Heart Attack

By Michael Monks (River City News) and Mark Collier (Fort Thomas Matters)

Campbell County Jailer, Jim Daley.
Campbell County Jailer James Daley suffered a heart attack this week and is now recovering in the hospital.

County leaders reacted by making sure the jail continues to operate normally and also extended their well wishes to Daley and his family. "He's the most important employee in the jail, but there are 129 other employees over there and we have good people in place and there has been a great outpouring of concern over Jim and a whole lot of offers to help," said Judge/Executive Steve Pendery. "We think we ought to be able to keep things headed in the right direction though we miss him and certainly wish him the best."

Chief Deputy B.J. Champagne has taken over day to day leadership of the jail while Daley recovers, County Administrator Matt Elberfeld said. "He is empowered to (take over) by state statute," Elberfeld said, adding that the county checked with the county attorney's office to make sure proper procedures were followed.

"I asked what kind of shape we’re going to be in without Jim and I’ve been assured that for the short term we are in capable hands at the detention center. It’s a tough job, probably one of the hardest elected day-to-day," said County Commissioner Charlie Coleman.

"I wish him the best. I can't wait to see him back at work," said County Clerk Jim Luersen.
Daley, in his late 50's, suffered a heart attack early Wednesday and underwent surgery. The prognosis is apparently good.

"I think he's doing really well," Pendery said. "He's a very strong person and we're very optimistic that everything is going well for him. Of course, we hope so."

Daley, a Republican, was appointed to his position as jailer before winning a full term in the 2014 election. He had previously been appointed to serve as county attorney. He lives in California, is married, and has five children.
