School starts back up Tuesday for most children here in Ft. Thomas which leaves you with one last weekend for your final summer hoorah. You’re probably simultaneously singing songs of praise to get the welcome relief that the school year brings AND bemoaning the fact that you simply didn’t do all the educational and fun summer things you’d set out to do. So, you need to spend your final weekend wisely. Below is a breakdown of all the things you could possibly get done around town this weekend.
First stop is Ft. Thomas Coffee. You're going to need to caffeinate before you go on your errands so make sure you stop and get a latte. Also who actually needs more school spirit wear? Grab one of their T-shirts for your first day of school pictures. Local artist Kathy Smith has her work on display right now at the shop. She specializes in hand-painted sign and she has lots of awesome "school spirit" items.
You will then want to walk over to Ft. Thomas Central where you will want to pick up the original Whiffer-Sniffer. This is the new thing all kids want (why? I have zero idea but they want it!). It is a backpack clip similar to a keychain that kids can collect trade and even smell. It's the perfect back-to-school trinket for your kiddos. They even have one that smells like a chocolate doughnut and since we’re not getting Holtman’s (boo) at least your kids can smell our near-miss!
Once you have sniffed your way through Fort Thomas Central, you will need to stop at 15 North Pizza. They have recently just rolled out a new menu. Their menu was pretty spectacular to begin with but now they offer many sandwiches and best of all a more extensive kids menu. Kids can choose from cheese pizza, meatballs, or even a cheese quesadilla. Stop in for lunch and check it out.
Right next door to 15 North is the Art House. They are currently raffling off the original Julian 1/2 Easel that is valued at $299. Raffle tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5 and you can stop in any day during normal business hours to check it out. This is the perfect back-to-school gift for the budding artist in your family, so stop in and try your chances at winning.
At this point you are probably exhausted from all the walking. I mean, to go to those four places, you have to have walked about a half mile in total, right? OK, so not exactly exhausted but I'm sure you wouldn't mind some pampering? Studio Root Skin Care now has a brow special going on currently. Stop in and say hello to the owner Tami who can help you with your brows for an amazing price of $14 this week. You can visit her new easy online schedule to book a time that works best. She also has many more services that you should check out while you are there.
Continuing on with your pampering, head over to Anointed Touch Massage. You will definitely not want to miss a one hour massage from Tiffany. She opens at 10 today. That leaves you enough time to get 8 massages if you wanted before she closes. Eight!
If you’re forced to bring your kids along for this trek, be sure to stop in to the Convenient Deli Mart for an ice cream cone. New store owner Amanda Lloyd was happy to help when I was there with seven kids earlier this week and they even have a number of topping options for your chocolate or vanilla cone.
After all that you probably still have some time to head over to the YMCA. Pool hours are from 11 AM to 8 PM but they change after this week so take advantage of all the time you have the swim this weekend.
Once you’ve dried off, make one last stop at the Blue Marble to check out all the new books. Maybe buy all those books your kids were supposed to complete for their summer reading list. There is still time! Or, for those of you with a new Kindergartner ready to make the transition, they carry “Get Ready for Kindergarten” and “My First Day”, to great books to help ease a nervous child into it.
Dinner bell is ringing by now, so Midway can be your last stop. They now have five new beers on draft and they would love to have you wile away your final summer hours on the patio with a burger and a beer. And this weekend’s weather looks perfect to do just that.
So, get out and about, Fort Thomas, and let’s show our businesses how to end the summer right!
