Catherine (Zastrow) Onyemelukwe has led an interesting life.

After graduating from Highlands High School in 1958 and Mount Holyoke College in 1962, she joined the newly formed Peace Corps and was assigned to Nigeria.

In Nigeria, she fell in love, raised a family and spent the next 24 years in the country.  While a teacher there, she founded and ran a fashion company, co-founded Nigerwives (a group created for foreign women married to Nigerian men), and was president of the American Women’s Club in Lagos.

In 2014, Mrs. Onyemelukwe wrote her memoirs Nigeria Revisited: My Life and Love Abroad.

On Tuesday, September 22, the Connecticut resident came back to the area to discuss and sign her book at Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Crestview Hills.

In attendance were five of her Highlands classmates, Susan (Bertelsman) Gilliam, Joette (Ashbaugh) Garman, Nancy (Vail) McEntire, Gordon “Don” Arey and Brenda (Wolf) Strong.
