Children are back in school and the first crisp, fall air has arrived but thanks to the work of the Charities Guild of Northern Kentucky, more Northern Kentucky children will be able to run, play, and stay warm heading into the school year than they otherwise would have, due to the nearly $20,000 worth of shoe/winter coat vouchers that the charity annually gives.
The Charities Guild of Northern Kentucky is a volunteer and non-profit organization composed of approximately 50 local women who are committed to promoting the well being of children and families in Northern Kentucky. For over 30 years CGNK has hosted various events and fundraisers to benefit this mission.
The non-profits’ main charity event is called The Happy Feet Ball and is set to occur the evening of Friday, November 6 from 7-11 at the recently renovated Highlander Event Center in Fort Thomas.
Proceeds from the Happy Feet Ball will benefit the group’s flagship endeavor, the Shoe Fund, which provides shoes to area children in need, by partnering with local schools and social service agencies. Shoe vouchers are distributed, which allow individuals to shop for $30 worth of shoes and socks.
Kentucky ranks in the top five states for the percentage of children in poverty with 1 in 4 children living under federal poverty lines and 1 in 3 in city of Newport. New shoes can boost a child’s self-confidence, which can lead to marked improvement in school, assisting to break the cycle of poverty.
Through the fifty female philanthropists and community leaders, the program has expanded significantly in recent years both in the amount of monies raised and in the availability of the program. The voucher program is now available in conjunction with a number of social service agencies, including the Echo Soup Kitchen at Henry Hosea House, Holly Hill Children’s Services, and Madison Avenue Christian Church, to name a few.
Understanding the impact the Shoe Fund has on the community, CGNK members are motivated more than ever in their fundraising efforts. Past-President Cory Ruschman states, “Raising money for our Shoe Fund is so rewarding. The ladies of Charities Guild work hard year round to host the Happy Feet Ball and because of that our fundraising efforts have paid off.”
Tickets to this year’s ball are available for purchase through a guild member or at their website at www.charitiesguildnky.com. Tickets are $75 each or $130 for two and proceeds go to benefit the guild’s incredible causes.
In addition to supporting CGNK through attendance at the Happy Feet Ball, one can also become a “Pair Partner” which is a small donation of $30 and sponsors a pair of shoes for a child in need.
