USO Dance Leads to Salute to Veterans
Veterans from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs nursing home and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) treatment center are invited to attend the dance each year at no charge. Veterans are $10 and other guests are $25.
Linda Slone, whose husband Lonnie will serve as the event's emcee, is organizing the event.
"We have grown a lot over the years. We started it by using only half of the Mess Hall and we knew right away that we needed the whole place the next year," she said.
She said they host the USO Dance the Friday before the Salute To Veterans, where they expect to have about 200 people attend.
Slone said they are inviting every Veteran from the Fort Thomas VA Hospital to come as our guests.
"The VA Hospital brings them over on the bus and are also our guests for the evening. We are asking for donations to sponsor a Veteran," she said. "We have had so many fun times honoring our Veterans. It is sad to say that we have lost a lot of Veterans over the years but we do know that we have provided them with a very fun evening. We have had a lot of WWII Veterans, now Vietnam, The Gulf War and Afghanistan. It is such a pleasure to have all of them with us that evening."
The Northern Kentucky Young Marines will present the flags and the Greater Cincinnati Emerald Society Band will be preforming the service songs with bagpipes and drums. Hayden Kaye will be singing the Star Spangles Banner.
Slone said they also accept door prizes and that if anyone wishes to donate, she will pick it up.
"They are always exited to get a prize as well," said Slone. "We have been honored with a great number of volunteers who keep coming back every year. They love being part of this event and watching the pure joy on the Veteran's faces! I am so honored to have such a great group that helps us every year."
Slone can be reached at 859-750-9532. Donations made out to the City of Fort Thomas to support the dance and party are being accepted. Mail donations to City of Fort Thomas, 130 N. Fort Thomas Ave., Fort Thomas, KY 41075.
"We want every Veteran to go home with a great memory. It really is an honor to be at the USO Dance with such a great group of Veterans," she said.
Vietnam War veterans will also be honored and asked to speak during the city’s annual Salute to Veterans on Saturday, November 14.
The 50th anniversary of the beginning of the start of the U.S. war in Vietnam is being marked in 2015.
