Montessori Geography Though Our Classrooms

Despite recent reports about geographical illiteracy in the United States, Montessori students continue to thrive and excel in their knowledge of the world around them.  Why does their educational experience vary so greatly from their more traditionally schooled peers? This is one of the questions that will be answered during the Open House/Parent Education afternoon at Cornerstone Montessori on Sunday, November 15th.

According to the Gilbert M. Grosvenor Center for Geographic Education, “Learning geography will create citizens who are able to understand and do something about some of the major issues and problems facing the United States and the world.”  

Cornerstone Montessori School would like to show you the different approach Montessori schools take in teaching geography and how it is effective during their Open House/Parent Education Afternoon.

CMS teachers will take you on a journey around the world. Visitors will begin in the Pre-Primary classroom (students age 3 – kindergarten) and will experience how hands-on materials are used to teach introductory lessons demonstrating that our earth is made up of air, land, and water. After learning the primary components of our planet, students are introduced to puzzle maps. Guests will then continue on to the elementary and middle school classrooms to explore how these materials grow with the students and include lessons on native animals, climates, biomes, landmarks, river studies, and the cultures of various countries.
