The NKCCA was founded in 1992 to help promote cheerleading in Northern Kentucky to help cultivate competitive cheerleading in the region. Highlands was entered in four events and participated in a demo match as well.
The Senior Stunt Team, made up of Sarah Hoffman, Dareyan Lang, Maddi Tate and Macey Gilberson, won their division.
The small varsity squad placed third overall. The Game Day squad which is comprised of all of cheerleaders in the program placed fifth. The Game Day competition highlights traditional cheerleading by performing the fight song, a sideline cheer, and a floor cheer.
"This year we decided to person in our traditional sweaters, kilts, knee highs, and saddles. It certainly got people talking," said Carly Leopold, team coach, who is now in her fifth year at the help. "The Senior Stunt Group performed a flawless minute routine filled of elite stunting skills. This is a prestigious award as schools enter their best stunt group. It is the first time that I can remember a group from Highlands winning this award. I am so happy for my four young ladies that won the senior stunt award."
The middle school squad placed third overall, with the margin of victory between first and third being very small.
"I am extremely proud of the dedication and effort all of our athletes have put into the competition season. I thought they ended on a high note and competed with power and confidence," said Leopold. "When I took over this program in 2011, I wanted to make a competitive cheer program year after year."
Leopold said that middle school coach, Tammy Kimble, plays a large part in the success the varsity teams have seen recently. This is her second year of having a competition squad at the middle school level.
"Tammy and her staff have played a huge part in the growth of Highlands Cheer. We meet to talk about my expecations of the girls and how she can prepare them for the high school level," said Leopold. "After winning region last year, our name was on peoples lips. I truly believe we have a bright future ahead of us."
