Highlands bowlers finish successful season

The Highlands bowling teams did not go as far as they hoped in the state tournament Friday at Collins Eastland Lanes in Lexington.

But that does not take away from the successful season. Both teams captured 5th Region crowns.

The Bluebirds lost in the quarterfinals to South Warren, 3-0 (226-204, 233-203, 247-253) and the Ladybirds lost to eventual state champion Taylor County, 3-1 (181-145, 192-222, 159-139, 210-159) in the first round. The Bluebirds bowled 1,290 in the qualifying round to take the top seed in the tournament and the Ladybirds bowled a 1,047 to grab the seventh seed. Taylor County also won the boys team state championship.

The Bluebirds defeated Boone County, 3-2 (226-156, 221-183, 194-199, 192-211, 265-169) in the first round to advance to the quarterfinals. The Bluebirds finished state runner-up in 2014.

The three Highlands bowlers who qualified for the state singles championship Thursday all made the semifinals earning two more games and assuring themselves of a top eight finish.

Bowlers had to finish in the top four in their respective regions to make the state tournament. Highlands senior Jake Farley took third in the boys singles bowling a total of 1,174. Farley shot a 693 to make the semi-finals.

Farley also finished third in the state in 2014 with a score of 1,166. He won the Riherds.com Above and Beyond Award on the Boys side.

Highlands sophomore Andy Campbell finished seventh in the tournament with a 1,080 score. He finished fifth in the tournament last year shooting a 1,110.

On the girls side, Highlands' Katelyn Schneider shot a total of 976 to take eighth in the tournament. She shot a 633 to make the semi-finals.

Sarah Doyle from Scott County of the 7th Region won the girls tournament shooting an 1,105. South Warren's Kaleb Miller of the 1st Region shot a 1,231 to win the boys' tournament.
