Fort Thomas City Hall. FTM file. |
In the Mayor-Council form of government in Fort Thomas, the mayor assigns each of the six council members to three different committees, adding each to be a Chair of one committee. Issues are referred to committees, which brings a non-binding recommendation to full council for a vote.

RELATED: New Fort Thomas City Council Meets For First Time
Muller, a first time councilman in 2014, was the Chair of the Finance committee, arguably the most important committee because it meets yearly to set the budget of the city.
Fort Thomas has been run ultra-conservatively in terms of their budget, running a surplus at nearly the same level of the entire budget for the fiscal year. Property taxes are raised every year to the maximum available by law without a vote of the citizens.
In the past two years, there have been votes trending away from that direction. In 2015 two members of council voted against raising property taxes (Meier and Kelly), while Bowman voted against it last year.
Peterman, who has chaired the Finance Committee in the past brings, by far, the most experience on that committee while Councilman Jeff Bezold has held steady in his two votes by raising property taxes to the state-allowed compensating rate plus 4%.
Newcomers David Cameron and John Slawter will Chair the Labor, Law and License and Public Safety, committees separately.
Bezold moves from Chair of Public Utilities to Chair of Parks and Recreation, which was previously held by Kelly.
