Local Girl Killed in Tree Accident is Identified

The teenage girl who was struck by a tree and killed in Fort Thomas yesterday has been identified.

Police say that 15 year-old, Michelle Chalk, is the deceased.

She was set to start school as a freshman at Highlands this year and previously attended Johnson Elementary.

Lt. Jamey Gadzala said she was visiting a home on Pebble Creek Circle when she and her friend sat
on a hammock attached to two trees when one of the eight-foot tall trees gave way, collapsed and fell on her. The second juvenile was not seriously injured.

The incident happened at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday. First responders found the deceased girl in the back yard of a residence moments after the accident.

Gadzala said that there were adults home at the time of the incident as well as several children.

The victim did not live where the incident occurred, but the parents have been notified.

Police said there will not be a criminal investigation.

Fort Thomas Schools Superintendent, Karen Cheser, said that grief counselors will be available today starting at 7:30 a.m. at Highlands High School.

"They will be available at Highlands High School for any student, or parent, who would like to talk with them," she said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family."

Chalk was part of the production of the Cincinnati Ballet's Nutcracker each year since 2013. Victoria Morgan, the ballet's Artistic Director remembered her fondly.

We are deeply saddened to lose Michelle who was a vibrant and beloved member of our young performers cast. She danced in our Nutcracker performances each year since 2013 and was most recently featured as lead soldier in our 2016 production. On behalf of all of the Cincinnati Ballet family, our condolences go out to Michelle’s family during this difficult time.”

A rosary and vigil will be held at 6:15 and 8:30 p.m. tonight at St. Catherine and Highlands High School, respectively.
