Teen Girl Killed After Tree Falls on Her in Fort Thomas

A teenage girl is dead after she was struck by a tree in Fort Thomas, police said.

She was set to start school as a freshman at Highlands this year.

Lt. Jamey Gadzala said the girl, 15, was visiting a home on Pebble Creek Circle when she and her friend sat on a hammock attached to two trees when one of the eight-foot tall trees gave way, collapsed and fell on her. The second juvenile was not seriously injured.

The incident happened at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday. First responders found the deceased girl in the back yard of a residence moments after the accident.

Gadzala said that there were adults home at the time of the incident as well as several children.

The victim did not live where the incident occurred, but the parents have been notified.

Police said there will not be a criminal investigation.

Fort Thomas Schools Superintendent, Karen Cheser, said that grief counselors will be available tomorrow starting at 7:30 a.m. at Highlands High School.

"They will be available at Highlands High School for any student, or parent, who would like to talk with them," she said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family."

The identity of the victim is being held until her family can be notified.
