ALERT: N. Fort Thomas to be Shut Down Temporarily on Tuesday, January 9

Fort Thomas Independent Schools is conducting a bus evacuation drill on Tuesday, January 9 from 12:30 - 1:15 p.m.

Due to Johnson Elementary's campus structure, there are limited locations to evacuate buses safely, so the Fort Thomas Police are assisting in shutting down the roadway from Dixie Place to Hartweg Avenue.

Campbell Co. YMCA.
Fort Thomas Independent Schools Director of Transportation, Matt Winkler, said that by statute, school districts need to conduct four bus evacuations for all students every year.

"The safety of our students is top priority when being transported," said Winkler.  "While most students do not ride a school bus to get to and from school in our district, the chances of them riding a bus for a field trip during the year is likely and we want them prepared in case of an emergency."

He said that it's similar to flying on an airplane, in that everyone hears the safety protocols whether you have flown one time or 100 times.

"School bus safety goes an additional level and we perform the evacuation in addition to the safety talks," said Winkler.
