Vintage Bourbon: Better with Age

It’s time to open grandma's liquor cabinet and dust off those old bottles. Vintage bourbon is no longer a thing of the past. With new 2018 Kentucky legislation in place allowing retailers to purchase and sell vintage bourbon, Cork 'N Bottle in Crescent Springs is ready to purchase any unopened vintage bourbon bottles.

Bottles must be sealed with a tax strip on top in order to confirm production date. Cork 'N Bottle is offering free estimates with no obligation, so there's no reason you can't partake! The experience will be fun, no matter if you're buying or selling.

A Sip of History

Although it is believed bourbon has been distilled and enjoyed since the 18th century, the term "bourbon" wasn't used widely until the 1870's. Although knowledge of the distilling process was probably introduced by settlers from Scotland, Ireland and England, bourbon is distinctly American, known as "America's Native Spirit". Kentucky has the strongest historical association and produces 95% of the world's bourbon.

From the late 1970s to early 1990s, people began drinking more clear liquor and rum, leaving bourbon manufacturers with more supply than demand. Bourbon produced during the "glut" era, as it came to be known, is now sought after for its unique qualities including a longer aging period and meticulous production standards.

The bourbon production process was much slower then. Bourbon and rye were distilled to a lower proof, resulting in more flavors with less aging time. Barrels were also made of old oak, rather than the younger trees used now. The ingredients themselves were more organic, making true bourbon taste hard to come by today.

Cork ‘N Bottle’s Antique Bourbon Program

Although Cork ‘N Bottle appreciates all bourbon, some are favored more than others. James E. Pepper, Old Taylor and Early Times are a few of the store’s vintage favorites. These bourbons have unmatched flavors of molasses, caramel and butterscotch with hints of pepper.

As a longtime area destination for specialty and single barrel release bourbons, Cork ‘N Bottle has introduced an Antique Bourbon Program to offer a unique experience for all bourbon lovers and collectors. Soon customers will be able to taste vintage bourbon and purchase bottles on site harkening back to the old “speakeasy” of yesteryear.

Vintage bourbon tasting sessions will be offered by appointment only. Whether you have your own bottles stored away for selling, or you want to taste vintage bourbon for the first time, Cork ‘N Bottle has a flavor-filled opportunity waiting for you.
