We gave a simple prompt: Why Are You Running? Their answer is below.

Campbell County Commissioner (District 2)

By Pete Garrett

Experience Matters!

As a life-long resident and business owner, the quality of life and success of this County are important to me as demonstrated by my community involvement.  This began as a pre-teen assisting my father going door to door to get children vaccinated against polio.  I was a YMCA camp counselor during summer break from high school.  I worked for the Committee of 500 candidates in the 60’s.  I was on the County Republican Executive Committee in the 70’s and recent years.  I also was active in assisting with many Republican candidates’ campaigns (Jim Bunning, Art Schmidt, Mitch McConnell and others).  In 1980 I was part of the political action committee that was instrumental in turning Newport around from “Sin City” to what it is today.  I also served on the Newport Citizens Advisory Council in the early 80s.   I served on the County Comprehensive Plan Committee twice.  In 2010 I was elected to County Commission and served through 2014.  In 2014 I was elected to the Soil Conservation District Board.  Throughout my life, while running my own business, being a husband and father, it was important to me to remain involved in my community.

I believe it is important to strive for thoughtful development while preserving the rural and bucolic nature of our County.   I believe we should abide by the current Comprehensive Plan which had significant community input.   I have a good understanding of the entire County, having worked in Newport and lived in Ft. Thomas and California.  I have continually educated myself, paid attention and stayed involved in what happens in our County.  I want to be a Commissioner who represents and works for the benefit of the entire County.

I am pro-life, endorsed by Northern Kentucky Right to Life and pro-second amendment having owned the oldest gunsmithing shop in the State for 42 years.  Please visit for more information and honor me with your vote on May 22nd.  Thank you.
