Video: Newport Man Arrested After 25-Minute High Speed Chase on 471, 275

A Newport man could be facing charges in Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio after leading police on a wild chase with speeds up to 120 miles per hour Friday.

Caught on traffic cameras, David Smiddy of Newport rammed three police cruisers while making a U-turn on 275 in Whitewater Township.

Newport Police Chief, Tom Collins, said the chase started in Newport and went into Indiana and then to Ohio for about 25 minutes.

Collins said the chase started from Newport onto 471 then onto 275 after a domestic disturbance in Newport. Police say Smiddy hit a Newport officers who was trying to contain him. That officer was not seriously hurt.

The crash ended when the suspect crashed into Indiana police vehicles. Smiddy was taken to a hospital in Dearborn County and then to the Dearborn Count jail.

Investigators say he told them he ran because he didn’t want to go back to jail.

Smiddy faces at least one count of felonious assault in Ohio and is expected to be charged in Kentucky and Indiana.
