The property has been vacant since then, but improvements to the site recently have indicated something could be on the move.
Now we know what is in the works at that location.
The owner of Newport Wash & Tan, located in the nearby Newport Shopping Center development at 1109 Monmouth Street, has acquired the building, a separate parcel from that development, and intends to offer the same business in the new location.
A timeline for when the new business will open is not firm at this time.
Tom Fromme, the City of Newport's City Manager, said that an ambitious project should begin in spring for the next phase of work on Carothers Road in front of this building. The work includes raising the roadway, moving utilities and improving the overall look of the area, similarly to what was done on the eastern end of Carothers Road near Newport Pavilion.

Texas-based Albanese Cormier Holdings purchased the Newport Shopping Center and Newport Plaza in January of last year and has opened or plans to open several businesses including A.C. Moore, Crunch Fitness, Newport Tire and Urban Nails.
