Morscher Park Field Named for First Newport Catholic Girls Coach

The Newport Central Catholic boys and girls soccer teams will now and forever play their homes games at Don Velten Field at Morscher Park Sports Complex.

In 1985, Velten became the first coach of NCC's girls soccer program. The team had a record of 8-5-1 that year and he was named Coach of the Year by the Northern Kentucky High School Coaches Association. He went on to coach another two seasons for the Breds, amassing a 29-16-3 record.

Yesterday the school honored Velten and his family by unveiling a new sign at the field, now named Don Velten Field.

"Earlier this year the Family of Donald E. Velten, gifted Newport Central Catholic with its generous support to continue to improve our soccer field. This support is in honor of Don Velten's coaching legacy," said Tessy Krebs, of the NCC Development Office. "Morscher Field has come a long way and will continue to improve with the passion set forth by Don Velten and the generosity of the Velten Family."
