Highlands teacher, Colleen Epperson, wins Global Leader award

Science teacher Colleen Epperson received a Global Leader award for encouraging her students to improve the world.

Each month the Fort Thomas Independent School Board selects people who have demonstrated the skills identified in the district’s Portrait of a Graduate. These skills match key roles of courageous leader, empathetic collaborator, creative problem solver, curious and critical thinker and global communicator.

Global Leader awards are open to all including students, faculty, school staff and administration, parents, community members or area business people. Nominations can come from anyone in the school community.

A final Global Leader award went to teacher Colleen Epperson. Highlands counselor Schnitzler nominated her colleague for the award as a courageous leader, empathetic collaborator and creative problem solver.

"Colleen is the epitome of a teacher who offers real-life opportunities to her students. Through her work with the AP Environmental Science class, Envirothon and the recent cleanup of the campus, Colleen continues to find ways to improve the world around her," said Schnitzler.

"I learned that this summer she had the opportunity to take a 16-day educational adventure to the Peruvian Rain Forest...Colleen continues to lead students in the understanding of environmental concerns and creating solutions."

Schnitzler added, "I was able to see her students at work on Sunday, September 29, at the cleanup event...I was amazed at the dedication of these students working hard to improve their campus on a 90-plus degree day. Thanks to Colleen, these students have an excellent role model to help them continue to develop Portrait of a Graduate competencies."
