Highland High Takes Top Place in State Dance Competition

The State Champion Highlands High School Dance Team will head to Orlando for the National Dance Team Competition.

 by Robin Gee

For the second year in a row, the Highlands Dance Team earned first place for their Pom routine at the Kentucky High School Sports Association (KHSAA) competition. The team competed at the end of December for the state championship in Louisville.

The team, which includes students on all grade levels from freshmen to seniors, was honored at the January Fort Thomas Independent Schools District board meeting. Board members congratulated the team and gave them t-shirts and certificates.

KHSAA is the agency designated by Kentucky to manage high school athletics and includes 280 schools and more than 70,000 students.

The next stop will be Orlando, Florida, for the National Dance Team Championship (NDTC). The Highlands team will compete in Pom and in Hip Hop.

The nationals are held at the Walt Disney World Resort® starting January 31. The NDTC is administered by Universal Dance Association, a division of Varsity Spirit and is endorsed by the National Federation of State High School Associations, the national service and administrative organization for high school athletics and fine arts programs. More than 800 teams and 15,000 student-athletes compete each year.

Congratulations to the team and to their coach Erinn Volpenhein!
