Village Players Presents ’Room For Seconds’, March 6 Through March 14

Room for Seconds opens March 6 (L to R: Ginny Butsch, Katie Jensen, Judy Littlefield)

By Jessie Eden

If you’re a theatre person like myself, you like a good story with maybe a twist or two. It’s even more fascinating if it has local ties.

That’s exactly what “Room for Seconds” brings to the table…literally.

The two act play, written and directed by Fort Thomas resident A.K. Forbes, follows a man who brings his new 24-and-a-half-year-old girlfriend home to meet his mother. But, then a sauce made of strawberries sends her to the hospital. In the aftermath, his mother, his ex-girlfriend, and his father conspire to avoid legal culpability. Their efforts prove to be ineffective…but humorous, revealing hidden motives and secrets, ultimately ending with the status quo safely intact.

What started as a 10 minute play that A.K. jotted down 10 years ago eventually grew into a full play…but not without some hard work. “It started with a situation. I just started writing to see where it led. I worked on it off and on but I just kept going back to it.”

It took A.K. a while to sort some details of the show out but eventually, after several years, things came together and her time spent writing paid off. “It’s a challenge. I work 40 hours a week and I haven’t had much time to write Act 1…and then Act 2 was hard. So many things needed to happen and then something else needed to happen.”

The six-person cast consists of Ginny Butch, Nathan Henegar, Katie Jensen, Judy Littlefield, Steve Myers and the voice of Bill Brohaugh. “My favorite part of this show is what the actors have brought to the characters,” said A.K. “Katie Jensen plays a ‘Kim Kardashian-type’ character. They all bring so much humor to the lines. They’ve been a joy to work with.”
