KYTC officials studying whether partial reopening possible until repairs
“We are going with a safety-first approach for the 4th Street Bridge,” said Bob Yeager, chief district engineer for the Department of Highways District 6 office, “KYTC officials are looking at a number of options. It might be possible to open the bridge back up, with restrictions, until a repair is made.”
Options include keeping the bridge closed, or a partial opening with lane restrictions and a reduced weight limit. Once decided, District 6 will put the plan in place.
The 4th Street - Veterans Bridge carries 13,676 vehicles a day on average and currently has a posted 17-ton weight limit. The bridge was opened in 1936.
Pedestrians can still use the bridge walkways and bicyclists can use the roadway.
Motorists coming from Newport can use York Street to the 11th Street – Licking Valley Girl Scout Bridge to Greenup Street. If traveling from Covington, motorists can use Scott Street to 12th Street to the Licking Valley Girl Scout Bridge to Monmouth Street as a detour.
Now you're getting it, government. Quarantine the broken bridge, not all the healthy cars driving over it.
