Cities all over our area are following Kentucky Health Department and the governor’s guidelines to keep citizens safe. While some options for limited contact to conduct necessary city business are in place, many city facilities are closed to the public.

The city of Alexandria normally offers a wide array of opportunities for its residents, especially children, through at the Calvin A. Perry Community Center. Right now the center is closed for business, leaving Recreation Department Director Kim Wagner with a challenge – How to help residents get in some fun and recreation at this time when access is so curtailed.

The Alexandria city recreation department combats boredom and encourages fun for every day of the week on the city's Facebook page.

She came up with a plan to use the city of Alexandria’s Facebook page to help combat the boredom and anxiety that comes at times like this and to encourage children and adults alike to think outside the box when it comes to having fun.

"It all started at the last council meeting, which was held on Facebook. Andy (Mayor Schabell) shared a video of signs around town set to music. I really liked it, and thought, what if I use social media to come up things kids could do?"

Throwback Thursday activities on the Alexandria city website evoke simple ways to have fun inspired by the past.

She posts things to do tied to each day of the week including Monday Fun Day, Tasty Tuesdays, Wonderful Wednesdays, Throwback Thursdays and Fit Fridays. Activities have included how to play the card game “War,” making apple slice donuts, yoga for kids and a recipe for homemade salt dough.

Wagner plans to continue to share her creative and fun posts for as long as needed.

Fit Fridays offers opportunities to get in a little exercise at home.
