In a cozy shop along Alexandria Pike in Southgate is where you will find Celestial Scents Candles. Festively decorated for the holidays, the shop’s soothing scents beckon you to explore more and discover their hand-crafted selection of candles, soaps, lotions, and more. Putting her heart and business savvy into this business is owner Denise DeMoss. Having grown-up in Campbell County, DeMoss has always be in tune with the delights of shopping local and seventeen years ago, DeMoss started Celestial Scents Candles from her home. In August of this year, DeMoss opened her retail space.
Celestial Scents Candles offers products for everyone on your shopping list including sea salts, whipped hand soap, scrubs, hand sanitizer, shaving soaps, beard oil and of course, candles. Their soy wax candles come in three sizes with a wide array of scents and burn times. You will also find loofahs, mitts and other bath time items as well as holiday and wood home items-all artfully handcrafted as well.
A small sampling of products to tempt you: Sugar and Shea Body Scrub, Avocado Body Butter, Cactus Flower and Jade Candle, and Peppermint Foot Soap. Perhaps a Lavender Bath Bomb? Even Santa can use a hand with shopping sometimes and there are many variations of products and scents to choose from.
DeMoss shared more about her business with Fort Thomas Matters:
“At the beginning of this adventure I had no idea how candles were made, or even where to buy supplies to make them! After a lot of self-learning, trial and error and an honest family, over the years Celestial Scents Candles very much improved!” adding, “offering over 150 amazing fragrances all blended into a best all-natural soy wax with cotton core wicks. Celestial Scents Candles are all hand poured in small batches with no added colors and finished off with the most amazing love and passion! The quality of our products as well as our customer service is absolutely some of the most important parts of our everyday mission of operating Celestial Scents Candles.” shares DeMoss.
Growing her business
DeMoss reflects, “In 2019 Celestial Scents Candles launched a new product line of handmade soaps and skin care products. Our goal is to handcraft in small batches all-natural soaps and other personal care items that help with different skin conditions and to share our learning with others to help improve the quality of their life.”
“On May 15, 2020, I applied for my WBEC (Women’s Business Enterprise Certification) via the WBENC. On July 15th I was given the opportunity to share my business story with the National Council as well as a tour of my production location to which is where all my products are made. On July 20th, 2020 Celestial Scents Candles was granted our National Women’s Business Enterprise Certification (WBE) by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council. On September 16, 2020 Celestial Scents Candles was granted our Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) certification!” Adds DeMoss.
In this together
While the ongoing COVID-19 crisis has had its share of challenges for Celestial Scents Candles, it has been uplifting to know that so many in the community have supported her. “People walking by have stopped in to wish me luck, it’s really kind” says DeMoss.
To help shoppers during the pandemic, they offer online shopping, local deliveries and curbside pick-up. Orders normally ship within 48 hours.
Her mission is not only to sell quality products but lend a helping hand to others via sales of their “Charity Candles”, choosing to donate 10% of sales directly to that organization. Current charities include The Barracks Projects, Toys for Tots and CABVI.
DeMoss invites you to visit her store (in person or online) and other Women-Owned Small Businesses in your community, “Women Business owners are driven, supportive to others, genuine, hard workers and dedicated to sharing their stories with other women to help them grow their business.”
