The Highlands Bluebirds girls basketball team (2-3 overall) found some bright spots Friday. But the Bluebirds could not make enough plays to beat the host Walton-Verona Bearcats losing 51-49 in double overtime.

Walton-Verona (5-1) last beat Highlands, 56-49 on Feb. 4, 2012. The Bluebirds had won eight in a row against the Bearcats.

Highlands led 50-47 after making two free throws. But Walton-Verona junior guard Audrey Carrico hit a deep three-pointer to send the game to the second overtime.

The Bluebirds saw senior forward Kelsey Listerman lead the way with 17 points with junior center CC Shick scoring 15. Senior forward Rory O'Hara scored 12.

Walton-Verona had two players in double figures. Senior point guard Haylee Neeley scored 23 and sophomore wing Grace Brewer scored 18.

Free throws made the difference in this game. Both teams took 18. Walton-Verona made 16 for 89 percent and Highlands made 13 for 72 percent.

The Bluebirds take on Bellevue (0-4) on Saturday on the road. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
