Liquor Barn, a Louisville-based independent chain of liquor stores with locations in Northern Kentucky, including DEPs, has been sold to GoPuff, a Philadelphia-based delivery service.

Merk & Gile Injury Attorney. 526 York Street, Newport. Free consultation 513-713-0862.

GoPuff delivers food, snacks, pet supplies, cleaning supplies, paper goods, home needs, over-the-counter medicines and even liquor from what it refers to as its micro-fulfillment centers. Started in 2014 in college neighborhoods, the service has grown to include more than 400 micro-fulfillment centers in 650 cities. The company employees more than 7,000 people.

In a similar move at the end of 2020, GoPuff acquired the California-based BevMo! Chain, a leading alcoholic beverage specialty retailer. In that deal, the BevMo! locations would continue to operate their neighborhood stores, but the transaction would give GoPuff access to an expanded product line for its micro-fulfillment centers.

In June of last year, DEP’s Fine Wine & Spirits in Fort Thomas was acquired by the private equity firm Blue Equity LLC, which also owns Liquor Barn and Party Mart stores in Kentucky. After the acquisition of DEPs in 2020, Blue Equity Chairman, Jonathan Blue said not much would change for customers in Northern Kentucky.

“DEP’s is a prominent chain that’s been in business for many, many years, and everybody knows them,” said Jonathan Blue, commenting on the deal in 2020.

Blue also noted the personal relationship he has with DEP’s former owner Greg Depenbrock and his family, and said he plans to keep the DEP’s name—which stands for Discount Everyday Prices—and its business approach. “They were successful because of who they are and what they did,” he says. “We’ll maintain the culture and bring some of ours in as well, bringing out the best with the combined situation.”

While it is yet unclear how the move will affect DEPS and Liquor Barn stores this year, Blue told the business news service The Lane Report, "Through this partnership, we will continue to deliver beer, wine and spirits and will add thousands of new items that our customers need in everyday life.

Gopuff is the ideal partner to bolster the business into this next era of growth and meet customers’ evolving needs. We look forward to working closely with Gopuff as we integrate Liquor Barn into their business and serving as strategic advisors on alcohol-related initiatives."
