Earlier this week Fort Thomas Matters reported that the Newport Racing and Gaming facility is expanding its space. We have received confirmation from Churchill Downs that the operation will move into the space recently vacated in June by its neighbor Ace Hardware.
The expansion will add almost 13,000 square feet according to Tonya Abeln, vice president of Communications for Churchill Downs.
The plan for the additional space is to designate it as a smoking permitted area. The existing space will remain non-smoking. Management will move 150 games to the new space, she said.
This was the first year for the facility and a rough one for many entertainment venues, but Abeln said the company’s historical racing machine facilities, including the one in Newport, have done very well.
"Our HRM facilities in Kentucky performed very well and, not surprisingly, the second quarter of this year was record-breaking for that property. The success of HRM facilities in Kentucky reflects an ability to develop innovative new products, which includes adding new game titles and cabinets from partners like Aristocrat, IGT, Scientific Games and Konami that enhance our customer’s entertainment experience and continually bring new interest to what we offer," she said.

"We also keep an eye on the customer experience with improvements and expansion like this one. Since we are relocating 150 of the current machines into the new smoking area, it will create a more spacious environment. We are also adding a new bar area that will give customers' options and more space for food and beverage. The lease expansion provides additional parking. We expect to have the project completed in late November of this year."
