After Months of Closure, Purple People Bridge to Reopen this Friday

The Purple People Bridge is scheduled to reopen Friday, Nov. 19, with a private ribbon cutting featuring local elected officials and donors planned at 5 pm.

The bridge was closed in May after a large stone fell from the first pier out of the Ohio River with access temporarily blocked for public safety concerns.

The bridge is owned by the Newport Southbank Bridge Company and programmed by Newport-based Southbank Partners.

Following the ribbon cutting at approximately 6 pm, the switch will be flipped as the bridge and Wish Tree are once again lit for the annual Winter Nights River Lights holiday light display.

This year the annual holiday light display will also feature Yarn Art installations on the Ohio and Kentucky approaches leading up to the Purple People Bridge.

Winter Nights River Lights is made possible by Newport on the Levee, Corporex, CIG Communities, Newport Foundation, Southbank Partners, and the Newport Southbank Bridge Company.
